Is it safe to paste customer data into ChatGPT?
By Meer Development B.V. ยท Updated 18 July 2026
Short answer: not by default. Pasting a customer's details into ChatGPT means sending personal data to a third party, and under the GDPR that needs a lawful basis, a clear purpose and appropriate safeguards. The good news is that you can still use ChatGPT for real work, as long as the personal data never reaches it.
What happens to data you paste into ChatGPT
When you send a prompt it is transmitted to the provider's servers and processed there. Exactly what happens next depends on the product and its settings:
- In consumer accounts, conversations can be retained and, unless you opt out, used to improve the models.
- Human reviewers may see a sample of conversations for quality and safety.
- Processing often takes place outside the EU, which adds transfer obligations under the GDPR.
Business and enterprise tiers offer stronger commitments, such as not training on your data and signing a data processing agreement. Those help, but they do not change the basic fact that you are sending personal data to an external processor, which still has to be justified and documented.
What the GDPR (AVG) expects
The GDPR does not ban AI. It asks you to:
- Have a lawful basis and a specific purpose for the processing.
- Apply data minimisation, only process what you actually need.
- Put a processing agreement in place with any processor.
- Be transparent with the people whose data you handle.
Data minimisation is the key that unlocks everyday AI use. If the personal data is not needed for the model to help you, remove it first.
How to use ChatGPT safely
Most tasks (summarise this email, rewrite this letter, extract the action points) do not need the real names, addresses or account numbers. They only need the structure and the meaning. So:
- Anonymise the text first, replacing personal data with placeholders like
[Name#1]. - Paste the placeholdered version into ChatGPT and ask your question.
- Restore the real values in the answer when you bring it back.
Done locally, the personal data never leaves your computer, so there is far less to justify, document or worry about. This is exactly what anonymising before you use AI is for, and it is how Redacto works.
The takeaway
You do not have to keep customer data out of your workflow, you have to keep it out of the AI. Strip the personal details before you paste, and ChatGPT becomes a safe everyday assistant instead of a privacy risk.
Try Redacto, free and local
Mask names, emails, IBANs and BSNs before you paste into AI, then restore the real values in the reply. Nothing leaves your computer.
